LE CAUSE DI ESN

 

L’obiettivo principale di ESN è quello di contribuire all’arricchimento della società attraverso gli studenti internazionali. Per questo motivo, come associazione studentesca si prefigge di organizzare attività che possano favorire l’integrazione degli studenti internazionali e che abbiano come focus le sei Cause di ESN: Culture, Education & Youth, Environmental Sustainability, Health & Well-Being, Skills & Employability e Social Inclusion.

 

ESN CAUSES

 

The main ESN aim is contributing to the enrichment of society through international students. For this reason, as a student association, we seek to organise activities that can facilitate the integration of international students inspired by the six ESN Causes: Culture, Education & Youth, Environmental Sustainability, Health & Well-Being, Skills & Employability, and Social Inclusion.

 

CULTURE

 

La cultura può essere definita come i costumi, i valori e l’attitudine sociale di un gruppo di persone in un particolare momento storico. Conoscere e accogliere il modo di vivere di culture differenti è un incredibile motore motivazionale per i giovani, che permette di aprire la mente e scoprire nuovi orizzonti. Uno dei valori di ESN è “Uniti nella diversità”: per questo motivo, i membri della nostra Associazione lavorano affinché ci siano scambi interculturali frequenti tra gli studenti internazionali e la città ospitante.

 

Come volontari di ESN Siena GES organizziamo City Tour, visite guidate nei musei, viaggi alla scoperta delle bellezze naturali e storiche dell’Italia e partecipiamo a fiere e conferenze che possano portare gli studenti a contatto con la cultura locale, affinché essi ne apprezzino l’essenza più profonda. Allo stesso tempo, tramite cene internazionali, Tandem linguistici o contest culinari permettiamo ad ogni studente in scambio di mostrare qualcosa del proprio Paese e della propria tradizione, per far sì che questo scambio sia bilaterale e non a senso unico. Inoltre, ESN Siena GES partecipa ogni anno all’Incontro Culturale Erasmus (ICE), un viaggio di tre giorni a Roma, città simbolo della cultura italiana, organizzato da ESN Italia e che raccoglie studenti internazionali provenienti da tutta Italia.

CULTURE

 

Culture can be defined as the costumes, values, and social aptitude of a group of people during a particular historical moment. Knowing and welcoming the way of living of different cultures is an incredible motivational engine for young people, which lets them open their minds and discover new horizons. One of the ESN values is “Unity in diversity“: for this reason, the members of our Association work to ensure frequent international exchange between international students and the hosting city. 

 

As ESN Siena GES volunteers, we organise City Tours, guided tours in museums, trips to discover the natural and historical beauties of Italy, and participate in exhibitions and conferences which can establish a close contact with the local culture, so that they can appreciate its deepest essence. Meanwhile, through international dinners, linguistic tandems, or culinary contests let exchange students show us something of their own country or tradition, to ensure that this will be a bilateral exchange. 

 

Moreover, ESN Siena GES yearly participates in Incontro Culturale Erasmus (ICE), a three-days trip to Rome, city symbol of Italian culture, organised by ESN Italy to let all the Erasmus students in Italy get together.

 

EDUCATION & YOUTH

 

In quanto organizzazione studentesca volontaria che ha un ruolo chiave nell'istruzione superiore in Europa, i nostri membri forniscono informazioni sui programmi di mobilità e motivano gli studenti a trascorrere un periodo di studio o tirocinio all'estero. 

 

ESN Siena GES organizza conferenze sulla mobilità per aumentare l'accessibilità delle informazioni durante le quali i suoi volontari condividono la propria esperienza di mobilità al fine di mostrare come essa possa essere un investimento per il futuro. I nostri membri partecipano a fiere organizzate a livello nazionale da stakeholder che riconoscono ESN come partner, quale il Salone dello Studente. Inoltre, la collaborazione con l’Università di Siena e l'Università per Stranieri di Siena, ci consente di lavorare a stretto contatto con l’Ufficio Relazione Internazionali (URI) per garantire un periodo di mobilità equo, regolare e piacevole per tutti gli studenti internazionali. A livello studentesco, anche l’attività svolta con gli ‘Erasmus in Schools’ ha una fondamentale importanza: grazie a questo progetto, i membri della nostra Associazione possono promuovere agli studenti delle scuole elementari, medie e superiori le opportunità ed i benefici di una educazione superiore svolta parzialmente all’estero, grazie anche alla collaborazione di studenti Erasmus che possono parlare della loro esperienza e presentare l’educazione nel loro Paese d’origine. Grazie a tutto questo, possiamo mettere le basi per la nascita di futuri volontari e cittadini attivi.

EDUCATION & YOUTH

 

As a voluntary student organisation with a crucial role in higher education in Europe, our members give information about mobility programmes and encourage students to spend a period of their studies or internship abroad.

 

ESN Siena GES organises conferences to increase access to information about mobility programmes and share our experiences with the purpose of showing how such an experience can be an important investment in your future. Our members participate in national events organised by some stakeholders which recognise ESN as their partner, such as Salone dello Studente. Furthermore, collaboration with the University of Siena and the University for Foreigners of Siena lets us work in close contact with the International Relation Office to guarantee an equal, regular, and pleasant mobility period in Siena for all international students. At student level the activity carried out through the ‘Erasmus in Schools’ plays an essential role: thanks to this project, the members of our Association can promote to primary, middle, and high schools students the opportunities and the related benefits of an higher education partially developed abroad, counting also on the collaboration of Erasmus students who can talk about their experience and present education of their own country. This project also lets us lay the foundation for the birth of future volunteers and active citizens. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

 

ESN sostiene una cittadinanza attiva, che invogli a cercare soluzioni per problematiche attuali. Per questo motivo, è uno dei partner più attivi per il raggiungimento dei 17 Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile, riconosciuti dall’ONU quali obiettivi essenziali da raggiungere entro il 2030. La salvaguardia ambientale e l’ecosostenibilità sono fondamentali, e la nostra Associazione si propone come esempio e guida per sensibilizzare la società verso la problematica e favorire la nascita di generazioni che siano consapevoli e rispettose verso l’ambiente.

 

Per questo motivo, ESN Siena GES organizza giornate di pulizia del verde, partecipa ad eventi di sensibilizzazione verso tematiche ambientali e collabora con organizzazioni del territorio che abbiano come scopo la salvaguardia ambientale. Di particolare rilievo è la collaborazione con Legambiente, partner di ESN Italia di cui ESN Siena GES è stata Sezione fondatrice nel 1994. Inoltre, come volontari ci impegniamo ogni giorno nel creare un mondo più sostenibile, realizzando eventi plastic-free o che riducano al massimo l’impatto sull’ambiente.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY 

 

ESN claims an active citizenship which encourages them to seek solutions for current issues. For this reason, it is one of the most active partners in the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, recognised by the United Nations as essential goals to reach by 2030. Environmental protection and sustainability are vital for us, thus our Association aims to be an example and a guide in raising awareness in society about this issue and wants to foster the creation of new generations that could be aware and respectful towards the environment.

 

That’s why, ESN Siena GES organises cleaning days of green spaces, participates in events to raise awareness on environmental issues, and collaborates with local organisations that aim at protecting the environment. Particularly relevant is the collaboration with Legambiente, partner of ESN Italy, whose ESN Siena GES was the founding Section in 1994. Moreover, as volunteers we are daily committed to creating a more sustainable world, by organising plastic-free events or activities which can minimise the impact on the environment.

 

HEALTH & WELL-BEING 

 

‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ non è solo un modo di dire, ma è uno degli obiettivi principali di ESN. Trasferirsi all'estero implica un grande cambiamento che sconvolge anche le nostre abitudini quotidiane. Per ESN è molto importante aiutare gli studenti internazionali a tenere in conto tutti i fattori fisici, sociali, intellettuali e psicologici che danno la definizione di benessere e che inevitabilmente vengono messi a dura prova durante il soggiorno all’estero. Ci preoccupiamo non soltanto della salute fisica dei nostri studenti Erasmus, ma anche di quella intellettuale, emotiva e sociale. 

Per questo motivo, ESN Siena GES organizza frequentemente eventi sportivi tra cui escursioni, partite di calcio, corsa o lezioni di ballo. Uno dei nostri partner più preziosi sono proprio le palestre del territorio che garantiscono sconti sugli abbonamenti ai nostri studenti in scambio attraverso la ESNcard. Organizziamo anche competizioni culinarie, condividiamo ricette e forniamo consigli su dove acquistare alimenti sani a prezzi accessibili. Inoltre, ESN è partner di Responsible Party, progetto mirato a sensibilizzare sugli effetti derivanti da un consumo eccessivo di alcol. Tra le altre attività, ESN organizza gli International Erasmus Games, competizione sportiva annuale per studenti in scambio provenienti da tutta Europa, che ha un suo equivalente a livello nazionale nei National Erasmus Games, organizzati da ESN Italia.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING 

 

‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ is not only an Italian idiom, but also one of the main aims of ESN. Moving abroad implies a huge change in your life which usually also affects our daily habits. According to ESN, helping international students take into account all the physical, social, intellectual, and psychological factors which define the concept of well-being is really important. All these aspects are inevitably sorely tested during a stay abroad. Therefore, we not only care about the physical health of our Erasmus students, but also about their intellectual, emotional, and social one.

 

That’s why, ESN Siena GES frequently organises sport events such as hikings, football matches, running or dance lessons. One of our most important partners, indeed, are local gyms which can give to our exchange students some discounts for any subscriptions in their activities by getting the ESNcard. We also organise culinary competitions, share recipes, and give advice on where to buy well-priced healthy food. Furthermore, ESN is a partner of ‘Responsible Party’, the project which aims at raising awareness on the effects deriving from an excessive consumption of alcohol. The International Erasmus Games is another important activity ESN organises in the name of this Cause. This is a yearly sport competition for exchange students from all over Europe, as well as its national equivalent known as National Erasmus Games, organised by ESN Italy. 

 

SOCIAL INCLUSION 

ESN sostiene la necessità di una mobilità più accessibile e inclusiva possibile, e supporta l’integrazione degli studenti internazionali nella comunità locale, ampliando la loro partecipazione e l'impegno sociale verso le comunità meno rappresentate. Un esempio dell’impegno di ESN verso l’inclusione sociale è MappED!, un progetto volto a promuovere possibilità di istruzione superiore accessibili per gli studenti con disabilità. Inoltre come Associazione vogliamo favorire l'implementazione delle esperienze di volontariato come parte naturale dell'esperienza di mobilità, organizzando attività che aiutino gli studenti internazionali a sentirsi utili per la comunità locale che li ospita.

Per questo motivo, i volontari di ESN Siena GES organizzano attività come visite al rifugio per animali, visite a case di riposo, raccolte di beneficenza o donazioni di doni o cibo al reparto pediatrico dell’ospedale di Siena. Inoltre, collaboriamo attivamente con altre associazioni del territorio che abbiano come obiettivo la difesa dei diritti delle donne o della comunità LGBTQ+, come il Movimento Pansessuale Arcigay Siena. 

Infine, organizziamo cineforum o giornate di sensibilizzazione in occasione di particolari Giornate internazionali o nazionali.

SOCIAL INCLUSION 

ESN claims the need for a more accessible and inclusive mobility and supports the integration of international students in the local society, by widening their participation and social commitment towards the less represented communities. An example of the ESN commitment toward social inclusion is MappED!, a project designed to promote possibilities of accessible higher education for students with disabilities. Moreover, we want to foster the implementation of volunteering experiences as a natural part of the mobility programme, by organising activities to help international students feeling useful for the local society which hosts them.

That’s why, ESN Siena GES volunteers organise activities such as visits to animal shelters, visits to rest homes for eldery people, fundraisings, or donations of gifts or food for the paediatric department of the Siena hospital. Furthermore, we actively collaborate with other local associations aiming at defending the rights of women or of LGBTQ+ community, such as Movimento Pansessuale Arcigay Siena.  

Finally, film discussions and awareness days are other kinds of activities we organise during particular occasions like International or National days for remembering particular historical moments. 

 

SKILLS & EMPLOYABILITY

Accanto a istruzione, cultura, inclusività, ambiente e salute, ESN si impegna anche nel sostenere la prospettiva lavorativa futura dei propri Soci e dei suoi studenti in mobilità. Ci teniamo a sottolineare come un percorso di studi o un tirocinio all’estero - così come un’esperienza di volontariato, quale quella in ESN - possa essere fondamentale per la crescita non solo personale, ma anche lavorativa.

Per questo motivo, ci occupiamo di organizzare eventi di due tipi: da un lato, sessioni con dei trainer, che possano aiutare professionalmente nello sviluppo di nuove hard e soft skills utili nel mondo del lavoro. Allo stesso tempo, riteniamo indispensabile organizzare incontri in collaborazione con il placement dell’università, con l’obiettivo di supportare gli studenti alle prese con le prime ricerche di lavoro, nella stesura di CV e lettere motivazionali e nelle prime presentazioni ai colloqui. Infine, parte fondamentale del compito di questo Team è anche informare e creare consapevolezza all’interno dell’Associazione stessa sulle skills sviluppate “involontariamente” attraverso il volontariato, fruibili anche nel mondo lavorativo.

In addition to Education and Youth, Culture, Social Inclusion, Environment Sustainability, and Health and Well-Being, ESN is also committed to supporting the future work perspective of its Members and its exchange students. We would like to emphasise how a course of studies or a traineeship abroad - as well as a volunteering experience such as the one in ESN - could be vital not only for personal growth, but also for the professional one.

That’s why, we take care of organising two kinds of events: on one hand, some training sessions that could help professionally to develop hard and soft skills useful in the workplace. Moreover, we consider it essential to organise some meeting moments in collaboration with the placement office of the University with the aim of supporting students struggling with the first job researches, drafting of CVs and cover letters, and with the first presentations for job interviews. 

Finally, another crucial task of this Team is also to provide information and raise awareness within the Association about those skills “unintentionally” developed through volunteering, which can be also used in the working world.
